Thomas Holloway used his business acumen and gift for advertising to amass a great fortune.

After his wife, Jane, died he founded a college for women in Surrey. The Royal Holloway is now part of the University of London.

Founded in 1886 it bacame one of Britain’s first colleges for women. Until around 1900 no woman could get a degree. It had been considered that women would become ill if they overtaxed their brains!

Thomas employed the architect, William Crossley who based the design on the Chateau de Chambourd in the Loire Valley. Whereas the chateau is constructed of white limestone, the Royal Holloway is built of red Victorian Brick. It gained the title of ‘Royal’ when Queen victoria attended the opening in 1886.

The first intake was 28 pupils. The numbers grew rapidly and since 1945 male students have been accepted. Considered one of the best Research Universities in the country, it now has around 8,500 students

There is a beautiful Chapel and an amazing Art Gallery to which many of the famous artists of the day contributed their work.

So the magic pills and potions have achieved a great deal!
